AMES, IOWA – (December 17th, 2021) – The Community Academy will hold a New Year’s Day Hike in Tedesco
Environmental Learning Corridor at 11:00 AM on January 1, 2022. This event offers an exciting
way to spend the first day of the year outdoors, meet new people and help raise money to
provide an innovative educational opportunity for K-8 students. The Community Academy (TCA)
is opening an innovative, full-time Microschool at ISU Research Park in Fall 2022.
“The Community Academy Microschool is offering a completely unique and life changing
educational experience for youth in our community that need something different,” says Mike
Todd, Head of School. “The amount of tuition assistance we can offer families is entirely based
on fundraising. You can help give more kids this opportunity by making a donation and attending
the hike.”

The New Year’s Day Hike will last about one hour and take place on the accessible, paved and
plowed trails. Special features include a scavenger hunt and prizes for the kids and free
refreshments for all who participate. Advance registration is preferred at
www.thecommunityacademy.org, but all are welcome to drop in on January 1 starting at 10:30
AM. Gather at 1815 Plaza Loop and park at the CORE Facility. Suggested donation for adults is
$25. This hybrid event will also be streamed for those who wish to follow along from home.
At TCA Microschool, students ages 5-13 will have the opportunity to become deeply connected
to their peers, their teachers, and their community through an immersive
community-project-driven educational experience. Learning is through personalized,
interdisciplinary, place-based, nature-focused projects and experiences that foster relationships,
critical thinking, and citizenship.
