Executive Director, The Ames Voice


The Ames Voice is a new, independent media outlet dedicated to providing high-quality, local journalism to the Ames, Iowa community. We are seeking a talented and passionate Executive Director to lead our organization and help us grow into a vital resource for our city. This is a unique opportunity for an entrepreneurial leader to build something special from the ground up.

This position is designed to be part-time to start, with the potential to become a full-time role as the organization expands. We are looking for a candidate who is highly motivated, community-oriented, and an excellent communicator.

Key Responsibilities

· Administrative Oversight: Manage the day-to-day administrative functions of the organization, including budget management, grant writing, fundraising, and compliance with all legal and financial requirements.

· Staff Recruitment and Management: Hire, train, and manage a team of talented journalists, editors, and support staff. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.

· Board Communication: Serve as the primary liaison between the staff and the Board of Directors. Provide regular updates on organizational progress, financial health, and strategic initiatives.

· Community Outreach and Public Speaking: Be the public face of The Ames Voice. Engage with community members, local businesses, and civic leaders to build partnerships and secure support. Represent the organization at public events, giving presentations and speaking on behalf of our mission.

· Individual Skills and Development: We value a candidate’s unique strengths and skills. This role is flexible and can be shaped to best utilize your abilities, whether they are in marketing, fundraising, operations, or another area. We are open to a job description that evolves with you.

Qualifications

· Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. You must be comfortable and effective at public speaking and networking.

· Leadership and Management: Proven experience in leadership, management, or project coordination. Experience in a media or nonprofit organization is a plus, but not required.

· Community Engagement: A passion for the Ames community and a desire to serve its residents. Strong networking abilities and a track record of building relationships.

· Administrative Acumen: Experience with administrative tasks, including financial management and strategic planning.

· Adaptability: The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, startup environment where priorities may shift.
