The Part-Time Student Program is primarily designed to augment the Company’s regular full-time staff and is for students who work in parallel to their school schedule YEAR-ROUND.
Your Responsibilities
As a Part-Time Student-Cloud Software Engineer for John Deere TechWorks located in Ames, IA, you will:
- Perform software development that enables Cloud Platforms for internal users.
- Implement solutions to improve cost, quality, and performance of software applications. Develop recommendations within established guidelines; work and decisions are reviewed by technical leads before implementation.
- Collaborate with other relevant stakeholders and team members to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs.
- Follow industry-standard agile software design methodology for development and documentation.
- Utilize Test Driven Development (TDD) to ensure code quality and reliability.
- Apply containerization technologies like Docker to streamline development and deployment processes.
- Integrate CI/CD principles to automate testing, deployment, and monitoring of applications.

What Skills You Need
- Ideally, you will be pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering; others may apply.
- Must be registered as a full-time student at Iowa State University.
- With a graduation date of May 2026 or later.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above.
- Available to work 10-20 hours/week during the academic year.
- Available to work 35-40 hours/week during the summer semester.
- Must be able to commute to the work location several times per week during the academic year, and Monday through Thursday during the summer semester with Friday as an optional remote day.
What Makes You Stand Out
- High level of attention to detail.
- Experience with JavaScript, Java, and Python.
- Experience working with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Experience working with Microsoft Azure platform technologies.
- AWS Cloud Practitioner level certification or higher.
- Familiarity with Test Driven Development (TDD).
- Familiarity with GitHub Actions, or similar CI/CD tools.
- Familiarity with Internet Network principles (TCP/IP, DNS, SSL/TLS).
- Knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker.
- Understanding of CI/CD principles.
