Description
Genvax Technologies is a startup animal health company focused on developing self-amplifying mRNA nanoparticle vaccines. Genvax Technologies seeks a Summer 2026 Synthetic Organic Chemistry Intern at our Ames, IA location. Your tasks will include assisting in multi-step syntheses, purification, and characterization of lipids and intermediates. This is a unique opportunity to work in the early stages of a startup company. This is a paid internship that runs from May 25th to August 14th (dates flexible).
Essential Job Functions:
- Carry out organic syntheses, purification, and characterization of compounds.
- Learn, apply and build on lab techniques such as:
- Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and reaction monitoring
- Column chromatography, recrystallization, and extractions
- NMR and HRMS analysis
- Maintain detailed records in an electronic lab notebook
- Follow established SOPs and safety procedures
- Contribute to ongoing projects and share results with the team
- Reports to the VP of Research and Development
- Hours are Monday through Friday with a minimum of 30 hours per week and a maximum of 40 hours per week
Requirements
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
- Previous hands-on experience in an organic chemistry research lab is preferred.
- Actively pursuing a degree in Chemistry or related field (Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply)
- Preference will be given to students attending an Iowa college or university, or students that have graduated from an Iowa high school and attend a college or university outside of Iowa
- Preference will be given to students within 1-2 years of graduation
- Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new skills quickly
- Basic computer skills
