As a Senior Director of Engineering at Workiva, you will be accountable for strategic objectives in the areas of XBRL, Strategic Growth Initiatives, and Financial Services. Relevant experience in highly regulated industries is also desirable. You will collaborate with cross-functional partners, VPs, and Directors, and define the objectives against which your direct reports will operate. Direct reports for this position include Senior Level Individual Contributors (Architects and Engineers), Engineering Managers, and Directors. Ensuring the right balance of operational excellence, innovation, and a bias for action against company-level goals is paramount to the success of this position.

 

Summary

The Senior Director of Engineering is an established leader in the Engineering organization. This role may or may not have direct reports that they manage. The key attribute of a Senior Director is leadership – either leading the efforts to build better products or leading and developing the engineering staff to become a top notch software development organization and is responsible for helping to align those groups and individuals to move the entire organization forward. This individual is responsible for the technical vision and evolution of a significant portion of the product suite or product platform. They evaluate and manage the technical decisions and innovations to ensure that the work done across multiple product areas is well coordinated and aligned with the overall strategic plan for product development. The Senior Director of Engineering synchronizes product development of multiple teams and ongoing customer discovery work to ensure customer satisfaction and achieving revenue targets from new products.

  • Manages operations staffing, including recruitment, supervision, scheduling, performance management, development, evaluation, and disciplinary actions
  • Demonstrates the charisma and assessment capability to attract top talent
  • Identifies and resolves interpersonal conflicts and resource issues

 

Operations Management: Creates and implements processes and policies that optimize operational effectiveness and efficiency and that enhance employee engagement and performance

  • Translates company strategy to operational goals and metrics for the team or division that serve to align and motivate employee performance
  • Ensures sufficient resources and staffing levels to effectively deliver superior products and customer service
  • Demonstrates efficient and effective use of organizational resources and seek ways to improve systems and services
  • Aligns with other divisions to analyze, monitor, forecast and prioritize initiatives in accordance with organizational priorities and strategic plans
  • Establishes and maintains regular written and in-person communications with the organization’s executives, department heads, and end users regarding pertinent departmental or divisional activities
  • Facilitates continuous improvement of quality and productivity by leading the department in ongoing re-evaluation and revision of processes, tools, and standards

 

Fulfillment of Customer Requirements: Identifies and clearly articulates customer needs and requirements and ensures that the products meet those needs and also serves the larger business needs of the company

  • Provides leadership for the product team to fully understand and resolve issues, concerns, and problems that result in delivering high quality product components
  • Provides management oversight regarding the identification of customer needs and requirements
  • Uncovers opportunities for new product development that result in increased revenue, profitability, and market share
  • Recognizes the implications of work being done for addressing the needs and concerns of the larger customer base of Workiva and growing the business

 

Architectural Oversight: Evaluates and manages technology decisions to ensure that the work done across multiple product areas is well coordinated and aligned with the overall strategic plan for product development

  • Provides leadership for the Development team in generating innovative solutions and exploring new approaches that will provide optimal solutions to identified issues
  • Supports Product Architects and Senior Software Engineers in leading the build effort and developing their leadership expertise
  • Establishes alignment across Product Development teams to a consistent vision, approach, and set of principles to identifying and resolving technical problems
  • Evaluates technical decisions driven by the Software Architects and Principal, Staff, and Senior Software Engineers to ensure alignment in approach and effective communication across product teams

 

Organizational Product Development Planning: Marshals the talent, resources, organizational structures, and processes to effectively build and deliver high quality software products

  • Manages dependencies between teams in forecasting and planning
  • Knows team’s capabilities and the scope and level of anticipated effort to produce intended results
  • Identifies and staffs the teams required for development of new products
  • Ensures that Product Development Managers and teams have the resources they need to be successful and that they work within planned budgets and timelines
  • Ensures quality of finished product

 

Financial Management: Demonstrates understanding of financial management principals to ensure decisions are fiscally sound and responsible

  • Demonstrates careful stewardship of resources and avoid unnecessary expenses and waste
  • Is aware of budgets relating to area and support management to ensure budget targets are met
  • Considers most cost effective approaches to work and resource utilization consistent with quality and service values
  • Fosters an environment that encourages fiscal responsibility

 

What You’ll Need

Education

  • Undergraduate Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.

 

Skills

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Experience

  • 5+ Years of management experience with demonstrated effectiveness building and managing an organization or team
  • Product development experience strongly preferred
  • Preferred industry related experience

 

Education

  • B.S./M.S. in computer science, software engineering or a related field, preferred

 

Travel Requirement

  • 25% – 50% travel by car/plane to meet with customers and Workiva personnel

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Reliable internet access for any period of time working remotely, not in a Workiva office.

 

How You’ll Be Rewarded

  • Base Pay Range in Colorado: $193,000 – $250,000
  • A discretionary bonus typically paid annually
  • Restricted Stock Units granted at time of hire
  • 401K match

 

The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities.
