Lab Technician

Job Summary:

The lab technician is responsible for conducting lab testing and research projects according to established protocols and within specified time constraints. The technician will document the process used, analyze results and communicate the findings to the customer and the supervisor. Testing materials and tissue sample disposal will be in accordance will all regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare lab reagents, media, autoclave duties, as well as other duties as assigned.
  • Prepare samples for analysis, which may include labeling, weighing, recording, pipetting, and plating.
  • Read, calculate and record analysis data to produce reports for internal and external clients.
  • Sample Preparation for Serology lab to run ELISA
  • Sample Preparation for Bacteriology testing
  • Sample Preparation for Feed lab Testing and analysis
  • Preform biochemical tests for organism identification.
  • Must have a clear understanding of biosecurity and cross-contamination prevention procedures
  • Knowledge of current regulations applying to farm and lab environments
  • Maintain accurate quality control documentation of analysis procedures
  • Have the ability to write and editing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Maintain Equipment Maintenance
  • Comply with Quality Control procedures
  • Autoclaving Waste and disposal in compliance with Environmental Health and Safety Requirements.
  • Reagent & media tracking and Ordering Supplies
  • Test Development as needed

Education and Experience:
  • 1-3+ years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, or related field preferred

Work Environment: The position operates in a research lab. This role routinely uses standard lab equipment such as beakers, pipettes, test tubes, flasks, thermometers, microscopes and computers. Must be comfortable with odors on occasion during the duration of testing.

Physical Demands: The employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time. May occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
