The Opportunity

Champion safety awareness! Responsible for the company EHS Program and activities. Develop and implement programs, policies, training, and assessments to ensure company is in compliance with all federal/state regulations and internal EHS policy. Foster awareness, engagement and accountability for EHS initiatives in home office of Ames, IA and also remote workers across the US. Define annual EHS goals and objectives and communicate results to leadership.

The Right Person Will

  • Have proven knowledge of safety principles and practices, CFR, Material Safety Data Sheets, PPE, environmental regulations, employee health, conducting audits and facilitating training.
  • Develop a plan and process for providing required and desired EHS training based on regulations and business needs.
  • Have a trained eye and successful track record to prevent or correct unsafe conditions.
  • Lead company Safety Committee, manage (analyze & resolve) near miss data, conduct accident investigations, and lead business EHS objectives identified annually.
  • Be a self-starter and able to work independently.  Yet, build collaboration across all levels of the organization.  Demonstrate sound judgement and the ability to analyze information and evaluate results to recommend the best solution &/or resolve issues.
  • Have the ability to conduct effective EHS training and communicate information and ideas in a manner that employees can comprehend.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and facilitates development and management of the Company’s EHS Program. This includes new hire orientation, evacuation plans, annual fire and sever weather drills, ergonomic assessments, OSHA compliance, PIT training and inspections, appropriate safety training for employees and supervision, etc. 
  • Promote safe and secure work practices for employees and ensure all operations and activities are in compliance with all state and federal regulations. Stays abreast of current EHS best practices and regulations changes.  Ensures management is informed and trained.
  • Investigate root causes of accidents and identifies and implements preventative measures.
  • Recommends overall company measures to reduce or eliminate accidents and health hazards. Inspects facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards.
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA regulations and its reporting requirements. Conducts periodic onsite audits and takes corrective action on any findings.
  • Ensures MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) and safety documents for plant processes are accurate and up to date.  Approves new MSDS before entering the facility.
  • Procures and monitors inventory of necessary first aid and safety supplies.
  • Reviews plans and specifications for changes or new machinery or equipment to determine if all safety precautions have been included.
  • Tours plant to inspect fire and safety equipment, machinery, and facilities to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Conduct environment testing – air, water, noise – as required.
  • Provides guidance and treatment for injured employees and maintains OSHA 300 log.
  • Coordinates workers compensation insurance claims and authorizes payment.  Responsible for reviewing workers compensation claims and reducing costs. Assists in the development of return-to-work plans for employees with restrictions related to injury or illness.  Facilitates discussion with employees, supervisors, insurance carriers, doctors and others as needed.

     

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related field preferred or 5 years’ experience in the administration of a safety program (preferably in manufacturing).
  • 2 years previous safety regulator experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Current or willing to obtain Trainer-the-Trainer certifications.
  • Strong interpersonal, employee relations, and leadership skills.
