Summary
The Director of R&D Program Management is accountable for the design, development, delivery, and oversight of the R&D program management team and processes. This role will build and lead a team that is chartered with delivering product capabilities for Workiva, helping realize business potential through program management excellence. The Director of R&D Program Management is responsible for engaging with business unit stakeholders to understand and support strategic initiatives while establishing a program portfolio and facilitating the portfolio governance process. This person is responsible for coaching and managing program managers, working together to deliver complex business initiatives, especially those which require multiple project tracks and cross-functional teams to deliver. Direct management of business initiatives will be required on an ad-hoc basis, but not at the expense of supporting the individuals for whom direct program management is their primary role.

Responsibilities

R&D Program Management

  • Drive R&D programs to completion.
  • Provide initial and interim planning, governance, and management for new program operations until they are fully transitioned to functional teams.
  • Build a clear and concise model and road map for program management excellence.
  • Responsible for leading the effort to design, develop, and implement tools and processes to enable project, program, and portfolio management, including operationalizing project tracking and reporting in R&D.
  • Continuously improve and innovate project management practice and methodology including pace, cost, and quality.
  • Define and track interdependencies between programs to ensure synchronized execution on project milestones while developing, maintaining, and reporting on an overall integrated portfolio delivery plan.
  • Oversight of project milestones/objectives, risk and mitigation, and the successful delivery/completion of projects in a matrix organizational structure.
  • Identify and implement improvements and enhancements to better meet our operational and business goals.

Program Management Strategy

  • Work with leadership to determine critical dependencies, identify and prioritize opportunities that could be scaled and, given the rapid pace of change, lead revisions to priorities as necessary.
  • Set appropriate goals and priorities that coordinate with key business partners, other organizational units, and third party resources.
  • Be the voice of strategic change, executing on both small and large initiatives to support the portfolio, business unit, and company objectives.
  • Partner with executive leadership to develop key performance indicators and project governance guidelines and templates.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in routinely briefing key stakeholders on technical aspects of assigned initiatives.
  • Align with other project/program management functions across the company to establish and support consistent language and efficient approach.

People Management

  • Ensure R&D program managers have the support and leadership they need to define, plan, orchestrate, and deliver on a given strategic initiative, including dependent projects and programs.
  • Provide work direction, coaching, and performance feedback to R&D program managers while establishing and maintaining positive, constructive relationships with customers, suppliers, and partners.
  • Help develop and grow individuals and teams through program work.

 

What You’ll Need
Education

  • Undergraduate Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.

Experience

  • 10+ years experience implementing a variety of complex technical projects and programs.
  • Experience planning and leading both plan-driven and change-driven projects using a variety of methodologies including agile, waterfall, and hybrid.
  • Experience working in a cloud environment.
  • Background in SaaS preferred.
  • Professional certification in project/program management: PMP, Agile, Six Sigma

  • Self-motivated with strong propensity for action, results and continuous improvement
  • The ability to work successfully in a high-energy, fast paced, rapidly changing environment is necessary
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and manage multiple processes, programs, and procedures simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to quickly earn the trust of sponsors and key stakeholders
  • Ability to mobilize and motivate cross-functional teams

Travel Requirement

  • Less than 10% travel

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Reliable internet access for any period of time working remotely, not in a Workiva office.

How You’ll Be Compensated:

  • Base Pay Range in Colorado: $160,000 – $204,000
  • A discretionary bonus typically paid annually
  • Restricted Stock Units granted at time of hire

The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities.
