The purpose of the Specialist is to operate under minimal supervision, responsible for the Ames’ facility, including operational issues, security, building maintenance and appearance, maintaining calibrations on instruments and systems and to participate in the validation of systems including inspection compliance. Will serve as a front line representative for the Ames’ facilities and is especially knowledgeable of the mentioned areas.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Service, maintain, and/or repair instrumentation & control systems as assigned. Perform and execute planning and scheduling of maintenance activities. Maintain calibrations & preventive maintenance for instruments & control systems as assigned. Review completed work orders and completion of documentation, attachments, signatures, and dates and communicate with Ames Site Head.
  • Enforce regulatory compliance, environmental health and safety & corporate policies, and procedures. Develop and maintain business processes in cooperation with EHS Representative related to site compliance, safety and security. Participates on the Ames Operations team.
  • Assist the innovation group with technical problems and operational issues. Review work requests including scope, rationale, seek approvals and determine impact to ongoing research activities. Contact parties involved for clarification, as necessary. Arrange for and schedule internal and external contract support as needed to complete corrective and preventative tasks.
  • In addition to the above, other assigned duties & projects deemed appropriate within the position scope. Arrange for and schedule contract support as needed to complete corrective and preventative tasks.  Assure safe and compliant operations of the facility equipment and associated systems.


  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution or five (5) years of relevant experience.
  • Requires a high level of mechanical expertise in the maintenance and operation of the facility equipment.
  • Requires good interpersonal skills working with a variety of personalities and external partners.
